There are those who want things to happen, some who wish it to happen, and others, like Ruby Lofton, who go out and make it happen. Even though she was too young to vote herself, at the age of 15 in Mississippi, Ruby activated her yearning to make things happen by courageously knocking on doors and putting out signs to get people out to vote. This was at a time when it was volatile and dangerous.
Ruby earned a degree at Mississippi Valley State University and her Midwife License at the University of Mississippi Medical School.
While in Chicago, Ruby worked and volunteered in various capacities:
- Organized community members to run for the public as the Executive Director of the Organization for a Better Austin.
- Volunteered in Chicago schools as a PTA organizer.
- As the Director of the Human Needs Center Ruby’s name and dedicated service had become widespread and Channel 2 News (CBS Chicago) honored her with the “Someone You Should Know” award.
- Worked with Congressman Danny Davis on his annual Back-to-School Parade and Picnic and his annual Christmas Dinner for seniors.
- Chairman of The Blue-Ribbon Charity Committee with the International Masonic and Order of Eastern Stars which served six (6) states.
Ruby now resides in Bolingbrook, IL, and continues her volunteerism:
- Ruby was presented in Washington D.C. with the National Unsung Hero’s Award recognizing 20 years of volunteerism.
- Distributes Thanksgiving Baskets and Back to School supplies annually, on her own accord, to those families and children in need.
- Member of the Bolingbrook Chamber of Commerce.
- Member of the Bolingbrook Crime Stoppers and a Board Member of the State of Illinois Crime Stoppers.
- Currently is a Precinct Committee Person and Will County Central Committee 2nd Vice-Chairperson (4 terms).
- In the past, Ruby has served as Will County Central Committee 1st Vice Chairperson and 1st and 2nd Vice of DuPage Township.
- Executive Board Member of Illinois Democratic Women of Will
One of the greatest accomplishments in her life is being married to her High School “Sweetheart” John Lofton. Her other greatest accomplishment is being the mother of two dynamic (and beautiful) children.
